The annual Welstead September Yawl Open set a racing record with 18 blue fleet boats participating amongst serene weather conditions after weeks of cancellations amid turbulent winds.

After enduring the battering of wild winds resulting in endless cancelled races, the heavens finally relented, gracing the Welstead September Yawl Open with warm sunny days and flirtatious breezes from the Northeast. Eighteen blue fleet yachts sped across the waters, the highest number in the event’s history, turning the race into an open anyone’s game.

Among the warriors of the waves, Mark and Phil (Y17) demonstrated early gusto, reaching Mark 1 first with Mike and Nicky (Y15), Dan and Tim (Y98), Simon and Ross (Y150), and Robin’s team (Y123) in their wake. A fierce race of tactics followed, culminating in ‘The Commodores Barge’ pushing ahead.

As the sun painted golden streaks across the sky, the seagoing spectators revelled in the pleasurable exhibitions unfolding. Racing far surpassed the forecast, leading to a friendly solidarity amidst fierce competitiveness.

Race 3 saw questionable routes turn into great calls under the guide of Race Officer, Nigel Blazeby. Dan and Tim came out victorious, finding the right rhythm in a game of nautical snakes and ladders. Simon and Ross followed closely, reinforcing the thrilling unpredictability of this record-breaking race.

The Welstead September Yawl Open indisputably lived up to its promise of an aquatic adventure filled with exhilarating competition, camaraderie, and the incomparable joy of sailing.
