Immerse yourself in the captivating world of sailing as we delve into the Sofia Season Opener's spectacular launch in the mesmerising Bay of Palma.

The Bay of Palma, a gem for sailing enthusiasts, recently opened its waters for the Sofia Season Opener. Even as northern Europe wakes from its winter slumber, Mallorca is awash in seven hours of daily sunshine, making it an idyllic location for sailors. For those participating in the early stages of the 55th Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mallorca, the winds have been ideal, ranging between 15 to 20 knots and making for phenomenal racing.

One unusual attraction this year has been the snow-dusted peaks of Serra de Tramuntana, adding a beautiful contrast to the sunny island landscape. However, the weather remains excellent for sailing, promising ample enjoyment for sailors who’ve packed a few extra warm layers.

The Princesa Sofia is anything but small, boasting over 900 boats and more than 1,100 sailors from 62 different countries. It marks the grand opening of the 2026 Sailing Grand Slam, organised by a cooperative effort between Palma’s major clubs, the Balearic Sailing Federation, and the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation. To promote and secure future growth, a foundation called Bahía Activa has been established to facilitate the collaboration of clubs and organisations.

Leading up to Princesa Sofia, several Olympic class sailors make Palma their base. Equipped with world-class facilities, reliable winds, and delectable Mediterranean fare, Palma becomes a beloved home away from home for countless sailors. The well-connected Palma de Mallorca Airport further bolsters the city’s appeal.
