Round the Island Race 2026 Entries Open as the Countdown to July begins
The race itself will be sailed on Saturday 11 July, when hundreds of boats — from family cruisers and club racers to seasoned offshore campaigners — will gather off Cowes to take on the iconic 50-nautical-mile lap of the Isle of Wight.
Organised by the Island Sailing Club, the Round the Island Race remains one of the world’s largest mass-participation yacht races, and one of the few where first-timers and veterans share the same tide, the same start line, and the same long day on the water.
Momentum building ahead of launch
As preparations shift from planning to execution, Race Director Dave Atkinson says the sense of anticipation is already tangible.
“The excitement and anticipation is really building as we approach the launch of Round the Island Race 2026,” he said. “We’ve been busy behind the scenes at the Island Sailing Club getting everything ready, and now it’s time to build momentum ahead of the race in July.”
Atkinson is keen to underline what has always defined the event — its openness.
“Whether you’re a seasoned competitor or keen to take part for the first time, the race is open to all. We’d love to see you on the start line and be part of a really special occasion.”
A course etched into sailing folklore
The Round the Island Race course needs little introduction, but it never loses its impact.
The fleet will start on the famous Royal Yacht Squadron line at Cowes, before heading west down the Solent toward The Needles. From there, boats sweep south past St Catherine’s Point, continue east around the back of the Island to Bembridge Ledge Buoy, and then turn back into the Solent for the final run home to Cowes.
For some, it’s a flat-out tactical race against the clock. For others, it’s a test of seamanship, teamwork and endurance. For many, it’s simply the best possible way to spend a July Saturday under sail.
With demand traditionally high — and fleets often running into the hundreds — early entry is strongly advised.
More than a race: Cowes comes alive
The on-shore experience is a key part of the Round the Island Race weekend. A dedicated Race Village on Cowes Parade will be open throughout the event, with live music and entertainment across three days, beginning on Friday 10 July.
Whether you’re racing, supporting friends, or simply soaking up the atmosphere from the shore, the weekend delivers that rare blend of competitive sailing and summer festival energy that Cowes does better than anywhere else.
One island. One day. Every reason to be there.
For veterans, it’s a tradition that never quite repeats itself the same way twice. For newcomers, it’s a rite of passage. For everyone involved, it’s a reminder of why sailing — at its best — is about shared horizons as much as results.
Entries opened 23rd January. The race sails 11 July.
