The Royal Southampton Yacht Club welcomes Karen Baker as their new Commodore. An accomplished leader, Karen carries an environmental mission to the esteemed yachting club.

The prestigious and historical institution of sailing, the Royal Southampton Yacht Club (RSYC), is embracing new leadership and inviting a breath of fresh air. Gone are the cliche expectations of rigidity and tradition alone. Here to stay is an era of transformation under the guidance of the newly appointed Commodore, Karen Baker, only the third woman to hold such a distinguished position in the club’s 150-year history. Baker, coming from a strong background in leadership, plans to lead this venerable institution with a strategic vision and a firm hand. A veteran yachtsman and an accomplished senior leader with a background in the National Health Service, Baker brings a wealth of experience to the table. Her unique blend of skills promises to inject vitality, governance expertise, and strategic direction into the club’s trajectory. Committed to preserving and enhancing the RSYC’s proud traditions, Baker expresses a strong ambition to introduce fresh ideas whilst bolstering the overall member experience. Key to her strategy is engagement - expanding the club’s membership and encouraging participation in a variety of sailing and water-based activities, thereby, ensuring RSYC’s vibrancy, relevance, and longevity within the sailing community. Importantly, her vision also extends to the ecological responsibility of the esteemed club. With plans to improve the ‘green footprint,’ Baker aims to project a commitment to the environment, acknowledging the unique position of RSYC being located in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Under her environmental initiative, thousands of saplings have been planted, river clean-up operations are in progress, and exploration of solar energy for sustainable water taxi services is underway. The aim? An environmentally aware club that takes pride in its surroundings and its role in preserving them. As the club prepares for this new era under Baker’s leadership, optimism and excitement sail on the horizon. The RSYC welcomes prospective members to join them on this exciting journey, with an open invitation extended for the upcoming Open Day on Monday, 6th April 2026.
