Recounting the Birth and Evolution of Australian 18 Footers League and its Indomitable Journey
In the heart of Australia’s sailing culture lies the remarkable tale of the Australian 18 Footers League, originally known as the NSW 18 Footers Sailing League. This august institution, which is currently gearing up for the 2025-26 season, began its journey back in 1935, continuing unhampered for 90 years with unflinching public support in Sydney Harbour. In this sea of change and competition, it is essential to look back at how the ‘League’ took form and trace its remarkable progress. In the early 1930s, the Queenslanders were keen to breathe new life into the ageing Brisbane fleet, which was on the decline. The Great Depression had hit the owners hard, discouraging them from getting new boats amidst mounting costs and the challenges of maintaining large crews. This prompted a shift towards more affordable boats with fewer crew members, which were eventually built by Frederick Hart. Hart’s ‘miracle boat,’ named Aberdare, emerged as a game-changer during the 1932-33 Brisbane season and went on to win the Queensland selection trials for the 1932-33 Australian Championship. However, despite its promising performance, Aberdare finished only third, falling behind two Sydney boats in a championship that was decided by a single race. Even so, the boat’s potential did not go unnoticed as it spurred several Sydney sailors to build a similar type of boat, leading the transformation in the boat style. Despite resistance from the Sydney Flying Squadron, the new boat styles eventually secured registration, triggering a major shift in the sailing landscape. The decision to withdraw from the 1934-1935 Australian Championship by the SFS marked a transformative moment in 18 footers racing in NSW. This decision led to a surge in supporters of the new boat style, catalyzing a meeting of sailing enthusiasts helmed by former SFS President, James J. Giltinan. This gathering later paved the way for the perpetuation of interstate championships and gave birth to the sailing institution we know today as the Australian 18 Footers League. Thus, by embracing innovation and evolving with the times, this league has played a significant role in the history of sailing in the region.
