Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust shines a light on Michael Green, a passionate mate, honouring his tireless dedication as Volunteer of the Year.

Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, a charity for young cancer survivors spearheaded by Dame Ellen MacArthur, recently awarded the Volunteer of the Year honour to a tenacious mate. Michael Green, a 62-year-old native of Saltcoats, North Ayrshire, received the accolade at the Trust’s annual volunteer training conference held on 21st March. The Trust compliments Green’s passion for dedicating his ‘whole heart’ to the cause, proving that commendation and applause are not his driving forces. Green, a marine industry professional, has been making monumental strides in the lives of young people since he began his philanthropic journey with the charity back in 2017.

The resonating impact of a cancer diagnosis in young lives extends beyond the debilitating treatment. It reverberates in their education, relationships, mental health, and self-esteem. The Trust’s thrilling voyages aim to rejuvenate the spirit of these young warriors, helping them rediscover their self-worth and independence. As they discern their potential and see that they are not alone in their fight, these youngsters come out with a rejuvenated optimism for their future. This leaves an indelible imprint on their mental wellbeing, fostering improvement and resilience.

Regardless of the emotional toll it takes on him, Green finds his motivation in the possibility of a brighter future for these survivors. He likens volunteering to running a marathon – a physically draining but psychologically rewarding endeavour. His favorite part is the lead-up to the trip due to the thrilling unpredictability it brings. Green’s selfless dedication to the cause encapsulates the very essence of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust’s mission, deeply touching the lives of young cancer survivors.
