Collision drama rocks The Ocean Race Europe start

The race had launched from Kiel in front of packed docks and grandstands, the IMOCA fleet blasting away in strong breeze with the bows barely touching the water. The first mark wasn’t far, but neither was trouble. A few sharp tacks, a burst of speed, and then – bang. Fibreglass, foam, and hopes dashed.
All crew are safe, but the mood was heavy back at the dock. “I don’t have any answer. I’m sad to be here now,” admitted Ambrogio Beccaria, skipper of Allagrande MAPEI Racing. “We only managed one mile after the huge effort to get here. It’s super sad for our competitor too. We’re checking the boat and won’t give up unless there’s truly no chance – but it doesn’t seem easy.”
For Holcim PRB skipper Rosalin Kuiper, the frustration was just as raw. “We’ve had to suspend racing because of hull damage. It’s incredibly disappointing for us, for Allagrande MAPEI, and for The Ocean Race. But we will overcome this – we have a very strong team. Now it’s all about getting the repairs done as soon as possible and, hopefully, being back on the start line in Portsmouth.”
Race Director Phil Lawrence confirmed both teams had formally suspended racing and returned to port to assess damage. “At this stage we understand both teams are hoping to rejoin. A formal protest has been lodged by Holcim PRB against Allagrande MAPEI and will be heard by the International Jury.”
While the drama unfolded astern, Biotherm and Paprec Arkéa wasted no time seizing the early initiative, streaking towards the Kiel Lighthouse scoring gate. Biotherm claimed the first two points of the race, with Paprec Arkéa taking one. Canada Ocean Racing – Be Water Positive made an early statement in third, ahead of Team Malizia and Team Amaala.
The fleet now points north, the breeze still full of bite. Ahead lie the wind farms, shifting currents, and the looming passage under the Great Belt Bridge. The first 24 hours promise spray-filled decks, blistering speeds, and precious little sleep. The Ocean Race Europe has barely begun – but it’s already delivered the sort of drama you usually expect at the finish line.
