Published: 28 Apr 2026
Competitors converged at Rutland Sailing Club on 25th April 2026 to demonstrate their sailing prowess at the esteemed RS100 Harken Sprints, where winds posed a significant challenge.

Imagine the exhilaration: four competitors brimming with anticipation, gathered at the Rutland Sailing Club on a sunny April day. There on 25th April 2026, they were all poised to compete in the yearly RS Sprints, a key event of the Rooster National Tour embellished with sponsorship courtesy of Harken. But Mother Nature had other plans. She unveiled a particular riddle - an undeniably sunny but teeteringly still day. The wind was nowhere in sight.

And so, they did. Fleet racing commenced right at 10:30, unfolding a day of excitement, resilience and sportsmanship. Ian Gregory, from Frensham Pond/Stokes Bay SC, made first strides, holding onto an unyielding lead in Race 1 that saw him the first to lay claim on the windward mark. Behind him, Tom Fletcher of Hunts SC segregated himself from Martyn Catlow hailing from Leigh and Lawton SC, clinching second and third places, respectively.

Race 2 gave little relief from the usual suspense. A surprised wind shift directed everybody to the port end of the start line. Darrell Sleep from Burghfield SC emerge as an audacious competitor, while others tacked off, his strategy led to an advantageous lift that rewarded him with the windward mark. A fateful downwind leg overtook Darrell, where Ian exploited his angle and speed to take the lead and win the race to everyone’s amazement, leaving Darrell and Tom to claim the second and third spots consequently.

Race 3 saw a calm, nearly nonchalant start from Ian Gregory. A hotly contested battle for runner-up positions ensued between Darrell Sleep, Tom Fletcher, and Martyn Catlow. An eye for wind patches and an instinctive gybe-off saw Tom sprint ahead of Sleep, securing his second place behind the unshakeable Gregory. With no further shifts, Gregory bagged his third victory. Fletcher was hot on his tail taking second, and Darrell Sleep rounded up the top three, closing a day of high medium-pace exhilaration, grit and joy of mastering the waters.
