Vital Training Camp Catapults African Sailors Toward 2026 Youth Olympics in Dakar
When adventure mingles with ambition, a compelling chapter in sailing history is written. Such a narrative is emerging on the historic coasts of Tangier, Morocco, where the third World Sailing Youth Olympic Games (YOG) training camp unfolded recently. It’s here that 13 athletes and eight hardworking coaches from Africa united, driven by the wave of a shared Olympic dream. Their eyes are set on one target - the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, expected to be held in November 2026. Sailors from nations including Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia, Madagascar, and Morocco, were further bolstered by first-time participants from Angola and South Africa. This confluence was orchestrated by World Sailing, fueled by funds from the International Olympic Committee’s Olympic Solidarity initiative. The camp focused on eliminating development barriers and equipping these African athletes and trainers with elite technical acumen to compete effectively. Fiona Kidd, the Head of International Development at World Sailing, proudly acknowledged the camp’s contribution in empowering both athletes and the sport’s sustainability in Africa. But the camp’s effects were far more sweeping, extending much beyond the waters. The camp managed to challenge and overcome one of the most daunting hurdles in African sailing - the access to equipment, thanks to a partnership with Tahe Outdoors, who loaned 10 boards to the participating nations. The boards ensured continuity in the sailors’ training by enabling them to train consistently even in their local waters, and empowered the coaches to build superior local programmes. The training was characterized by thorough technical instruction and race practice. Growth metrics showed a surge in the sailors’ technical skills, tactical insight and confidence. The camp’s success was built not just on water, but off it as well, with world-class support from the Royal Moroccan Sailing Federation and logistics managed by Nuno Reiss of the PROW Group, and the Secretary and Coach of the Royal Tangier Yacht Club. This not only helped in smooth execution of the event but also facilitated visas and ensured smooth local delivery.
