Embarking on an Unforgettable Journey through the Solent: A Yorkshireman's Adventures at Buckler's Hard
Every seafarer has a tale to tell. For Ian Furby, a Yorkshireman who would launch his boat from Runswick Bay, his story leads us through a mystical journey navigating the waters of the Solent and anchoring at the marvelous Buckler’s Hard. Despite his experiences sailing the northern seas, the Solent provided a new voyage of discovery.
Being at the helm of a Nordkapp Enduro 605 wasn’t for the faint of heart, but Furby was eager, ready, and excited. The vast expanse of water, new adventures around every wave, sightings of minke whales, and glimpses of sun-dappled bottlenose dolphins solidified his fondness for marine life and deepened his passion for sailing.
With the desire to extend his boating season and the support of a quality road trailer, our refined Yorkshireman navigated the roughly 300 miles to Oban. After soaking in its exquisite beauty, he decided to round off his season a little differently, by steering the Six 0 Five ‘down south’ to the Southampton Boat Show. A clear vision, some meticulous planning and nothing but the open water ahead, the journey promised exciting days of sailing and several cherished memories.
Their Boat Show visit was an annual event, usually a chance for beers and conversation among the ’lads’. Yet, this trip offered a unique twist. His wife, Sheddy, was to join him, transforming it into an intimate couple’s adventure. Thus, their berths were decided at the pristine Town Quay Marina, the ideal base, granting easy access to the show and located conveniently near a boat launch.
Prepared for his five-day journey, their Monday kick-off was welcomed by an ideal high-pressure system; bright blue skies, and lovely mid-20s temperatures. A northeast wind provided the only wrinkle, but nothing could deter our dauntless explorer. Hours away from Yorkshire, they landed at the Marina Office on the Solent and prepared for launch, having perfectly timed their arrival with the midpoint of the tide.
Their journey was fruitful. The array of sights, all bathed in the warmth of the afternoon sun, including the breathtaking landscape of Buckler’s Hard in the Beaulieu River, etched a lasting memory in their hearts. This remarkable journey underscored Furby’s burning passion for the sea, and Buckler’s Hard will undoubtedly call him back for many more adventures.
