San Diego Yacht Club (SDYC)
Founded: 1886 Location: Point Loma, San Diego, California
The San Diego Yacht Club is one of America’s most accomplished and respected sailing institutions. Founded in 1886, SDYC combines a rich racing legacy with relaxed Southern California charm. With a picturesque location on Shelter Island in Point Loma, the club offers year-round sailing in the temperate waters of San Diego Bay and the Pacific beyond.
SDYC played a central role in America’s Cup history, having hosted and defended the Cup three times during the 1980s and 1990s under the flag of Stars & Stripes. Legendary sailors like Dennis Conner are among its prominent members. The club remains a powerhouse in offshore, inshore, and one-design racing circles.
The SDYC waterfront campus features a modern, full-service marina, dry storage for smaller boats, and haul-out facilities. The clubhouse includes indoor and al fresco dining, lounges, junior and senior lockers, conference rooms, and event spaces overlooking the water. The pool, spa, fitness centre, and tennis courts enhance the club’s resort-style amenities.
A hallmark of SDYC is its Junior Sailing Program — one of the most competitive and successful in the United States. The club hosts the Junior Sabot Nationals, Olympic-class events, and is home to several national champions and Olympians. The Etchells, J/105, and Predator fleets are particularly active.
Cruising is equally central, with a calendar of destination cruises and access to outstations on Catalina and beyond. Social life is vibrant, with themed dinners, yacht club exchanges, and seasonal celebrations.
SDYC offers a balance of high-performance competition and relaxed West Coast luxury — a home port for the serious sailor and the social cruiser alike.
