Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron (RSYS)

Australia’s Premier Yacht Club Overlooking Sydney Harbour from the prestigious suburb of Kirribilli, the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron (RSYS) stands at the pinnacle of Australian yachting. Founded in 1862 and granted royal patronage in 1863 by the then Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII), RSYS is one of the most historically significant and internationally respected yacht clubs in the Southern Hemisphere.

From its stunning location just across the water from the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, RSYS offers not only unmatched views but also world-class sailing facilities, a deep commitment to competition and education, and a refined, welcoming atmosphere for members and visiting yachtsmen alike.

A Legacy of Elite Sailing RSYS has played a major role in the development of competitive sailing in Australia for more than 160 years. It has produced Olympic medalists, America’s Cup challengers, and numerous national champions. The club’s members have been central to events such as the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, and its sailors frequently represent Australia at international regattas.

The Squadron runs a comprehensive racing calendar, with events ranging from Wednesday twilight races and youth match racing, to keelboat regattas and national championships. It also hosts major regattas, including the RSYS International Youth Match Racing Championship, which attracts elite young sailors from around the world.

Facilities for Visiting Sailors

RSYS is equipped to accommodate both local and international sailors with a full range of amenities: Private Marina: Deep-water berths are available for yachts up to 30+ metres. Berths are equipped with shore power (single and three-phase) and fresh water. Fuel Dock: On-site diesel and petrol refuelling facilities. Wi-Fi: High-speed internet access throughout the marina and clubhouse areas. Showers, Toilets & Laundry: Modern and well-maintained facilities are available 24/7 for visiting crews. Dining: Multiple dining options including a formal Members’ Dining Room, the Cygnet Bar, and casual alfresco terrace dining—all with views over Sydney Harbour. Workshops & Marine Services: While the club itself does not provide haul-out services, it works closely with nearby marine service providers and chandlers for repairs, maintenance, and provisioning. Event and Meeting Rooms: Available for private functions, briefings, and yacht club reciprocal visitors.

The club also provides guest berthing for members of reciprocal clubs, making it a key stop for global cruisers and racers visiting Australia.

Education and Youth Sailing

RSYS maintains a highly active youth and adult sailing program, offering sailing school classes, keelboat training, and match racing development for aspiring professionals. The club’s youth teams frequently compete at national and international levels, and the training fleet includes Elliott 7s, Lasers, and other development boats.

The club’s Sailing Office provides full regatta coordination, weather updates, course management, and coaching support.

Whether you’re racing in Sydney Harbour, cruising the coast, or simply soaking in the rich maritime atmosphere, the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron offers a blend of tradition, luxury, and top-tier sailing that is unrivalled in Australia. It is not just a club—it is the beating heart of Australian yachting.
