The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (RNZYS)

Based in Auckland, is the undisputed flagship of New Zealand sailing and one of the most respected yacht clubs in the world. Founded in 1871, RNZYS has become globally renowned for its dominance in competitive sailing, particularly as the home of Emirates Team New Zealand, the country’s America’s Cup-winning syndicate.

From its base at Westhaven Marina—the largest yacht marina in the Southern Hemisphere—RNZYS commands breathtaking views across Waitematā Harbour and the Hauraki Gulf, offering one of the finest sailing arenas anywhere on the planet. The combination of deep heritage, professional organisation, and a thriving club culture makes RNZYS the premier yachting destination in New Zealand.

America’s Cup Legacy

RNZYS first gained international fame in 1995, when it became the challenger and then winner of the America’s Cup, the world’s oldest and most prestigious sailing trophy. Since then, Team New Zealand, racing under the RNZYS burgee, has successfully defended the Cup multiple times (2000, 2017, 2021), turning Auckland into a global centre of high-performance sailing and innovation. The club continues to play a central role in the future of the America’s Cup and international sailing, helping to shape race formats, sustainability initiatives, and youth development across the sport.
