Newport Yacht Club (NYC – Rhode Island)

Founded: 1894 Location: Newport, Rhode Island

Situated in the heart of Newport’s historic waterfront, the Newport Yacht Club (NYC) is one of New England’s most respected and active sailing institutions. Since 1894, it has served as a focal point for racing, cruising, and community engagement in one of the world’s great sailing cities.

Unlike some of its more exclusive neighbors, NYC is known for its inclusive, welcoming ethos. Its clubhouse, located directly on Long Wharf, offers stunning views of Newport Harbor and easy access to the open waters of Narragansett Bay. Facilities include a dining room, bar, meeting rooms, and waterfront terrace, along with showers and laundry for visiting mariners. The club also provides guest docks, a fuel dock, and launching ramps for members.

NYC is deeply involved in the local and national sailing calendar. The club hosts weekly racing, one-design regattas, junior programs, and cruising events. Its marquee regattas include the Coaster’s Harbor Regatta, Queen’s Cup, and Bristol Cruise. The club supports multiple fleets including J/24s, Shields, and classic yachts.

Junior sailing is a major focus, with a full Learn-to-Sail program, summer camps, and clinics for competitive youth sailors. The club partners with local schools and sailing programs to promote access to the water for all skill levels and ages.

Socially, NYC is active year-round with themed dinners, holiday events, music nights, and lectures. The community atmosphere attracts cruisers, racers, and families alike.

While Newport is famous for America’s Cup heritage and elite sailing, the Newport Yacht Club strikes a balance — offering top-tier waterfront access, a casual environment, and true sailor camaraderie.
