The Risks and Flaws of Modern Maritime Design: An Analysis of Superyacht Safety

Published: 14 Dec 2025
Boarding a superyacht in challenging sea conditions can be treacherous, given certain persistent design flaws.

Piloting a superyacht can be an invigorating experience. The feel of the salt air, the wind in the sails, and the stunning vistas can create the impression of conquering the seas. However, beneath this adventurous façade lurks the harsh reality of maritime safety. As any seasoned sailor will profess, being on the open water is not without risks, particularly when it comes to boarding a vessel under challenging sea conditions.

Recently, a case study from CHIRP Maritime’s Superyacht Feedback highlighted the risks associated with boarding a superyacht. This knowledge sharing program brought attention to several design flaws that could jeopardize the safety of both maritime pilots and crew members. Prompting this investigation were a series of unsuccessful boarding attempts under adverse weather conditions, along with the vessel’s corresponding non-compliant safety protocols.

The following day, the pilot was to board near the vessel’s stern, however, the resultant swell again set the stage for hazardous access with the potential risk of swamping the crew. As a somewhat desperate last resort, the crew opened a gate amidships - a decision that only amplified the existing danger due to the tumultuous seas rolling over the deck.

It was not until the third attempt in calmer weather that a successful boarding was made, but it did not come without its fair share of obstacles. The secured ladder against the ship’s hull proved inadequate, with poor securing, gaps, and obstructions posing as significant trip and entangle hazards.

These potentially life-threatening experiences underscore the urgent need for a design overhaul. It is crucial that manufacturers address these issues, as neglected safety measures and improvised, non-compliant boarding methods expose pilots and crew to unacceptably high risks simply not worth the thrill of the high seas.
