Day 3 of the Santa Maria Cup 2026 Unveils Tensions and Triumphs on the Waves
The tranquil seas of Annapolis offered an intense battlefield for the second stage of the 2026 Women’s World Match Racing Tour. After three gruelling days of competition, four out of ten outstanding all-female teams have secured their hard-fought spots in the Santa Maria Cup’s knockout rounds. Defending champion Allie Blecher from the USA, Sweden’s fearsome duo Anna Östling and Martina Carlsson, and the Dutch threat Julia Aartsen have all earned their place in the semi-finals, setting the stage for the rapidly approaching Saturday showdown. Despite the tranquil seas, the third day of racing got off to a delayed start due to unusually high temperatures over Annapolis confining the sea breeze. However, soon enough the sails were full, and the fierce battle for supremacy continued as the remaining round robin matches clashed, and the final four were confirmed. A particularly enthralling performance was delivered by Olympic Gold Medallist Lily Xu Lijia of China, who proved that her prowess extended beyond Olympic arenas as she triumphed in her very first Women’s World Match Racing Tour. Disrupting the status quo, Xu claimed an impressive victory over former Santa Maria Cup winner and fellow Olympian Anna Östling. Throughout, Allie Blecher and her steadfast Team BAAM held fort valiantly, topping the standings with fifteen wins and leaving no space for errors. Close on their heels, with fourteen overall victories, were Anna Östling and Team Wings. Asserting their dominance, Östling and her crew delivered one of the strongest performances of the second round robin. As the thrilling race unfolds, eyes are now set on the semi-final showdown where Blecher, Östling, Carlsson, and Aartsen will take their places at the helm.
