Sailing enthusiasts navigated through gusty winds at the ILCA Midland Grand Prix Open 2026, held at Shustoke Sailing Club.

In April 2026, a thrilling event unfolded on the choppy waters off Shustoke Sailing Club. ILCA Midland Grand Prix Open became an arena for 16 Lasers who laid down a marker for the fierce competition to come throughout the Midland Grand Prix circuit. The weather wasn’t an ally, with stormy winds and persistent rain possibly leading to a lower turnout than expected, but the sailors were undeterred. The day started with a crucial decision - to choose the larger, more competitive ILCA7 rig, or opt for the safer radial, ILCA6 rig. Nearly all competitors picked the latter, including the lighter-weight juniors. After a brief from the club’s Rob Marlow, the sailors took to the waters, which were bustling with activity as everyone geared up for the heavy conditions. The initial race got underway at 11 am, and it was non-stop action all the way during. The port side dominated the line, with sailors battling out to reach the windward mark. Getting on the port involved some daring moves, followed by hurried manoeuvers to lay down the starboard tack and round the mark. The first part of the race saw a lull in the wind, leading to some gybing and attempts to find more wind pressure. But with a sudden gusty comeback, things quickly changed. John Ling demonstrated exceptional mastery of navigation and weather reading to finish first in what proved an enthralling bout. Corrected positions showed John Ling leading, followed by Hatty Connnelly and Luke Wiltshire. The next race followed suit and showcased similar competitive spirit and skill, proving that the Lasers, despite the radial rig, were resilient, tactful, and unstoppable against nature’s whims.
