The Noiseless Revolution: Sleipner's Hybrid Power Centre Takes Marine Life at Anchor to a New Level
Sleipner, Norwegian marine technology company, just launched an off-the-shelf solution that could solve the inherent dilemma faced by large motor yacht owners. Operating big motor yachts, despite being propelled by big diesel engines, invariably requires additional generators for the ancillary systems. This means running more engines and dealing with their consequent noise and fumes. Even a tranquil bay can lose its allure amidst this incessant hubbub. Sleipner’s solution, the revolutionary Hybrid Power Centre (HPC) system, promises to alleviate this issue.
The core components of the HPC system, the 48V PTO generators, are designed to work with the standard power take-offs of all significant marine diesel engines and can effortlessly generate electricity using the excess torque developed by the engines. At idle, each generator can produce up to 5kW, and at cruising speeds, they can collectively generate 50kW - enough to power a robust 100kWh lithium battery pack in just two hours.
Turkish constructor Numarine is one of the first to offer this innovation as a factory option. Marketed as the ‘Mk2 Super Silent Pack’, Numarine’s latest 88ft explorer yacht, the 27XP can anchor for an entire night, with air-conditioners and stabilisers running, without needing to operate a generator.
Numarine, by incorporating a high capacity 92.8kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePo4) battery bank along with Sleipner’s Hybrid Power Centre, has maximised efficiency with the allowance for PTO generators to power the 48V DC bow and stern thrusters, as well as the electrically curved fin stabilisers. The introduction of the Sleipner’s Hybrid Power Centre is set to tweak the nautical paradigm, offering luxurious, quiet nights at anchor.
