Riding the Wave: The Woof's Unwavering Dominance in the 12ft Skiff Interdominion

Published: 27 Feb 2025
Recall the thrill of 12ft skiff racing, where Woof's design consistently tops the leaderboard. Meet the respected classic that’s still making waves.

The world of 12ft skiff racing is an addictive rush of water and wind, where the unexpected can happen. However, there’s one constant that rivals can’t outrace – the Woof. Crafted to perfection in the mid-90s by Brendan Egan and Jim Walsh, this carbon composite design has been a game-changer.

For decades, the sailing field saw a torrent of self-designed timber boats, sprouted by ambitious designers aiming for a win. But the introduction of the Woof altered the scene dramatically. Not just any hull, this design reframed skiff dynamics with its blend of speed, cost, and undeniable longevity, putting an end to the era of home-grown timber boats.

Fast forward to the 2025 12 Foot skiff Interdominion, the Woof’s influence was undeniable. Out of the 22 entries, a whopping 19 came out of the Woof mould or showed slight modifications of that design. And the winner? None other than Monkey Wrench, a 20-year-old Woof that, under the keen stewardship of its owner Jono Clough, still poses as a formidable competing presence despite its age.

The Woof’s continued supremacy denotes that, while the hull is a crucial component, it’s far from being the whole package. Skiff racing is about adapting to waves and winds, harnessing the best of technology, and above all, the exhilaration and passion for sailing.
