A Closer Look into Professional Misconduct and Harassment within the Superyacht Industry
The maritime world is a vast, ever-changing tapestry, coloured by the brave souls who dare to make the open sea their calling. Yet, like every other industry, it is not without its troubling currents. One such current has recently come to light, causing ripples that are hard to ignore: Inappropriate behaviour and harassment on board.
An alarming case study emerged from CHIRP Maritime’s Superyacht Feedback, the first program dedicated to enhancing safety and ethics within the maritime industry through crucial knowledge-sharing. An unidentified seafarer raised the flag on a worrisome issue, voicing their concerns about harassment and unprofessional conduct on board their vessel. The ship’s captain, the individual reported, behaved in an unacceptable manner, creating a hostile work environment.
The situation culminated when, during a crew gathering, the captain followed the crew member back to the boat and continued engaging in unwanted personal talk. Finding no other recourse, the crew member began recording the conversation to document the captain’s inappropriate behaviour. Ultimately, the captain resorted to derogatory language, leaving behind a disgruntled crew member and an alarming testament to misconduct on the open waves.
This singular incident illuminates a wider issue in the maritime industry - the need for stringent professional conduct rules and better workplace standards. The hopes are that this spotlight on unprofessional behavior will act as the tide that brings about much needed change. Having the courage to navigate the rough seas of truth should hopefully lead to calmer, safer, and far more professional waters for all those sailing within the maritime industry.
