Bracing Winter Winds Drive Spirited Youth Race Training at Paignton Sailing Club

Published: 15 Jan 2025
Avid young sailors at Paignton Sailing Club defied winter's chill in a captivating weekend filled with sailing strategies, camaraderie, and triumphant tacks.

In the crisp embrace of winter, Paignton Sailing Club burgeoned into a bustling haven for young sailing enthusiasts. The South West Youth Sailing Academy (SWYSA) masterminded an invigorating weekend of Race Coaching, held from Saturday, 11th to Sunday, 12th of January. Despite the winter chill, the conditions were surprisingly favourable, as the waves coursed rhythmically under the mellow gusts of an 8-15 knot wind.

Amidst the intense training and bouts of seafaring strivings, all sailors relished a hearty pasta lunch, courtesy of the host, Paignton Sailing Club’s diligent volunteers. The SWYSA’s Winter Race Coaching sessions brought more than skills to the fore - a friendly, inclusive spirit burgeoned, as young sailors spent hours together, nurturing friendships and upholding the passion they share for the waters.

The success of the event owes much to the plentiful contributions from coaches and parents, those who animated the event’s organisational efforts and navigated safety and coach boats on the water.

A hearty nod to Paignton Sailing Club for their warm reception and relentless commitment to hosting a successful event. The activities of the weekend have left our sailors eagerly anticipating the next training weekend, scheduled for 15-16 February, promising another exciting bout of maritime masterclasses.
