The yachting world bids adieu to an extraordinary leader, His Highness Aga Khan IV, a man renowned for his spiritual guidance and profound impact on international sailing culture.

The world of yachting mourns the loss of a defining figure, His Highness Aga Khan IV, who passed away at the age of 88. Known for his spiritual leadership as the 49th Imam of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims, his imprint spread well beyond the confines of religion. The Swiss-born leader was a fervent enthusiast of the sea, continually advocating for the joys and thrill of sailing. In 1967, Aga Khan IV co-founded the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, initiating a tidal wave of development in the area. His vision of showcasing Sardinia as a world-class yachting hub came to fruition under his watchful stewardship. Major international sailing events, such as the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta and the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, now take place on its alluring shores, attracting breathtaking vessels from around the world. His fervour for nautical excellence extended far beyond patronage, manifesting through feats of grandeur like the commissioning of the 50-metre ‘Alamshar’ by Devonport Yachts. Despite facing numerous obstacles in its creation, its eventual completion in 2014 is a testament to Aga Khan IV’s tenacity and the crew’s unwavering dedication to realising his ambitious design. Another embodiment of his penchant for speed and design was the 47-metre Lürssen Shergar, a maritime gem named after one of his racehorses. Operating on both land and sea, it reflected his understated but keen appreciation for design and performance. Today, the yachting world remembers this spiritual leader and yachting enthusiast who journeyed beyond the call of his duty, fostering a culture of maritime excellence and continuing his legacy on the high seas.
